there's no such thing as leftover paint!

I always put out more paint than I need, so I try to make use of it by doing little sketches. oil on illus board, a little bigger than postcard size.

christmas and beastie boys

I have a piece in the upcoming show at Gallery 1988 on Melrose in LA. The show is a tribute to the beastie boys and everything beastie boys related, as the flyer plainly demonstrates. I wanted to do something related to the song "Girls" because it's awesome.

A sketch....

And the finished piece. Actually, the photo here isn't quite finished, and the photo is very low-quality. But I had to rush this off to the gallery yesterday and wasn't able to get a proper scan. Sigh....

Also, since its Christmas, here's a really embarrassing photo I took of myself for reference. Sometimes in a pinch its hard to find people to model for you, so the 10-second self-timer on your digital camera becomes quite a handy device.
Merry Christmas! Hope to see everyone at the show!

More digital stuff. I had the sketch for this lying around somewhere but it seems to be no more....

a problematic gentleman, wip.

here's a work in progress. think JC Leyendecker as a Victorian vampire. the final sketch has his hands in it, which I think is what really makes this type of composition work.

and a detail, because the face came out really sweet:

November 17, 2008

it's conceptual.

I did this old sketch in April. I always thought it might have something interesting in it, so I returned to it recently.

I think I was right. Oil on BFK Rives, roughly 15x22 or something.

sargent = master

I did a master copy of John Singer Sargent's "Lady with a Rose." The poor scan quality has washed out a lot of the subtleties in the blacks and the whites, but I was so happy with how it came out that I couldn't wait to post it up here. I'll make sure to get a better image up eventually.
oil on board, roughly 14 x 34.

unity + variety!!

So I went to Nathan Fowkes's color workshop on Saturday at LAAFA with my good friend Tuna. It was wonderful and informative and inspiring, and Nathan Fowkes is quite the master of color and all things related to it! I highly recommend this workshop, or any by Nathan or at LAAFA, to anyone craving some extra knowledge. Here are a couple little color studies I did during the workshop.
Check out Nathan Fowkes work at http://nathanfowkes.blogspot.com
and also at http://nathanfowkes-sketch.blogspot.com, which is dedicated to plein air studies.

Also, Tuna should be putting some pictures up from his demo, look for them at http://bloggingtuna.blogspot.com.

workstuffs... shhhh

just a quick lil' poster I made today for work for a film festival in syracuse, ny. This is outside our normal scope of work here, more of a favor for someone rather than a high profile job, so I figure its alright to share.... but dont tell anyone I told you! It definitely needs some love but I'm quite fond of it so far.

October 22, 2008

weekly headpainting

Here's some more: three color studies from today (plus a trippy one for fun), chalk pastel.
They get super big if you click on them, but the originals are about the size of a postcard.

I forced myself to do a painting in just a few hours from start to finish. Oil and a little clean-up in Photoshop. Fun little exercise, you should try it!

August 15, 2008

its finally done!!!!

So, for the past two months I have been slaving away, night and day, working on illustrations for a kid's book called "Bruce the Hannukah Moose." Its about a young moose who, after years of not fitting in with the other animals, discovers his antlers are in the shape of a perfect menorah, and becomes the village hero. Think Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, only Jewish (and like Rudolph, it also has a musical accompaniment). It was a great project to work on, as everyone involved are all long time friends, and business meetings also meant margaritas. The book hasn't been completed yet - its due out closer to the holiday season. Because of this I can't show too much... but here's a quick sneak preview.

Now that its finally finished, I'm off to lay on a beach somewhere exotic and cell-phone free to recuperate!

August 8, 2008

how about another!

these are fun to do. so I do 'em. I tried outlining in pencil rather than inking though, which doesn't look as good.

More funtown drawings from fashion magazines. Both are pen on tracing paper, the first a result of some photoshop color experiments that I quite like. Gonna color the second one too, in the near future, so watch out.
