this guy!

I did this sketch based on Irving Penn's photograph of Giorgio de Chirico, because I thought he had a pretty good face. The likeness isn't all that accurate but I got a fun little drawing out of it either way. Hey now!

rose red teaser!

Hello, devoted followers! Here's another teaser of my finished painting for the About Face show, titled "Rose Red." The show opens January 13th at WWA Gallery in Culver City. I'll post the web flyer soon. I'm pretty happy with how this piece turned out, and from what I've seen so far the rest of the show looks killer too... It's one not to miss!

on the easel...

Hiya, here's a work in progress shot of my newest painting! this one is for the About Face show at WWA Gallery in Culver City, which is all about my favorite thing ever, portraiture. It opens mid-January, I'll post more info and a flyer when the time is drawing near. I'm pretty excited about this painting, I'm trying some new things and putting a lot of time into it, which hopefully will show in the final.
also, it's weird how just one wrong brushstroke can throw off an entire face... I've been doing touchups on this mug for about three days. alllllmost there. more soon!

HELP SAVE THE WILDLIFE WAYSTATION!!!

The Wildlife Waystation is in financial peril and desperately needs donations!! They are currently facing extinction, which would mean euthanizing hundreds of exotic animals, including my favorite one-eyed tiger Mongar, featured above. Help feed the tigers, lions, ligers, leopards, panthers, bears, wolves, hyenas, monkeys, llamas, and all the other amazing creatures housed at the Waystation by donating here.

Any amount helps! Do it!!

I didn't feel like sleeping so I did this instead. It's a master copy but for the life of me I can't find the name of the artist that painted the original... Anyone?

Ok... zzzz

tiger style!

I had the awesome and rare opportunity to visit the Wildlife Waystation this past weekend to draw some kitties. The first three are of this incredible tiger named Mungar who is blind in one eye. He probably weighs about a million pounds but prances silently around his enclosure like he's walking on air. It's pretty fucking fabulous to see. Anyway, more info about the Waystation at wildlifewaystation.org.
Donate money to them!

Interesting Specimen...

Finally finished my piece for the Bad Dads show at Spoke Art in SF! I was going to wait til the show opened to post the final, but I'm so stoked with how it came out that I had to post it early. The opening is two nights long, so check it out this Saturday and Sunday if you're in the bay area. Wish I could be there!

And here's a gigantic brush work detail of Bill Murray's face, in case you were ever wondering what Bill Murray's face looked like up close.

hope you enjoy!

bad dads...

I've got a piece in the upcoming Wes Anderson-themed "Bad Dads" show at Spoke Art in SF. I did a few likeness sketches from screenshots of Life Aquatic to prepare for my piece, which I'm thinking of titling "An Interesting Specimen." More later!

Also props to those who came out for the Project Ethos event at the House of Blues this past Friday, even though I forgot to post about it in advance. I had seven older paintings and four even older drawings in the show, along with four or so other artists, not to mention live painting, live music, fashion designers, and supermodels. lots and lots of supermodels. Thanks to the Project Ethos team for putting the event together!

olvera street

Recently I found myself downtown at Union Station with some time to kill, so I took an impromptu trip through Olvera Street to do some architectural sketching. I don't get the chance to do this sort of thing half as often as I'd like to, so it was particularly enjoyable to stroll around in the sun, churro in hand, searching for the best angle. LA <3

professor rufus dodo

who says dodo birds weren't intelligent? I made this for the Echo Park Artwalk that went down this past weekend - the theme for our show at 826LA was "Extinct Animals."
I have been rediscovering my love for charcoal, and it is beautiful.

this one came out slightly on the vampire-with-an-underbite side, but what can you do.

EDIT: I managed to procure a decent scan of a page in my sketchbook with the two most recent troll drawings... voila!

BUSY

HOLY SMOKES AM I BUSY.

But really. Check out the next group show at Gallery 1988 if you're in Venice this weekend, I have a painting in it! It's based on video games, which can only mean one thing for me - Zelda. Here's a detail of my humble contribution.
Hope you enjoy! See you all at the show!

a gentlemanly troll

A gentlemanly troll from the sketchbook while I should have been doing other things. I'm really into drawing normal people and making them look like trolls, though this time no one was around so I just ripped out a little section from the newspaper obituaries to use as loose inspiration.
in other news, my birthday is next month, and you are welcome to buy me a large format scanner. Just sayin'.

glenn vilppu workshop

oh! also this weekend I went to a drawing workshop with Glenn Vilppu, it was. epic. and extremely informative. thanks to Rebecca Kimmel of Korpus School for putting the workshop together!

gpk at 1988!

I just finished this painting for the garbage pail kids show at Gallery 1988! I did the whole thing in one day, which is something of a record for me, and I'm pretty happy with the results. I don't normally get all Lisa Frank with my colors, but it seemed somehow fitting for the theme.

...aaaand the sketch. I meshed the two together to get some more oomph in the neck. Anyway the show opens this Friday, and as is the case with all of their group shows, the lineup is killer. Check it out if you're in the area!
