First off, thanks to everyone who came out to the About Face show at WWA Gallery last weekend, it was a huge turnout! The work there was phenomenal and I recommend checking it out if you're in the Los Angeles area.

My painting "Rose Red" is on display there but since I never got a really good image of it, and there were parts that I wasn't super stoked on anyway, I decided to do what I always say I'm going to eventually do but never get around to - repaint the crap out of it in Photoshop. I got a little overexcited and ended up redoing almost the entire painting digitally... but I'm really happy with the final image and I'm glad I put the extra time into it.

year of the rabbit!

I finished my piece for the "New Moon" show at Myplasticheart Gallery in New York and couldn't wait to reveal it to the world! The show is based on the Chinese zodiac, and artists were asked to depict an animal of the zodiac calendar. I chose to do a rabbit, my own sign, which is incidentally also probably the best animal of the zodiac. In fact, it is definitely the best animal of the zodiac.

People always ask me about the process of these sculpture, so here's how it happened:

I don't have many shots of the sculpting process, but mostly it's just a bunch of tin foil wadded up on the inside with some armature wire, and covered in shapless lumps of Sculpey. from there I use that handy little pottery tool to sculpt out some semblance of a form. Sculpey is the business cause you can just pop it into the oven and it comes out hard and ready to paint in about 20 minutes. The head is screwed onto the wood board (which I cut myself out of a slab of oak) but since the paws hardly weighed anything I was able to just hot glue them onto the plaque.

Anyway, you get the point. If you're in New York on January 20th you should definitely check out the show, I won't be able to make it to the opening but the lineup looks pretty slick.

Happy new year everyone! We may have turned our calendars to 2012, but in the Chinese zodiac, the year of the rabbit is still going strong! here's an in-progress shot of my piece for the upcoming "New Moon" show at My Plastic Heart gallery in New York. I haven't done one of these sculptures in a while so I'm pretty excited about it. I'm always pleasantly surprised at the way these come out.

Hiya, here's a work in progress shot of my newest painting! this one is for the About Face show at WWA Gallery in Culver City, which is all about my favorite thing ever, portraiture. It opens mid-January, I'll post more info and a flyer when the time is drawing near. I'm pretty excited about this painting, I'm trying some new things and putting a lot of time into it, which hopefully will show in the final.
also, it's weird how just one wrong brushstroke can throw off an entire face... I've been doing touchups on this mug for about three days. alllllmost there. more soon!

I had the awesome and rare opportunity to visit the Wildlife Waystation this past weekend to draw some kitties. The first three are of this incredible tiger named Mungar who is blind in one eye. He probably weighs about a million pounds but prances silently around his enclosure like he's walking on air. It's pretty fucking fabulous to see. Finally finished my piece for the Bad Dads show at Spoke Art in SF! I was going to wait til the show opened to post the final, but I'm so stoked with how it came out that I had to post it early. I've got a piece in the upcoming Wes Anderson-themed "Bad Dads" show at Spoke Art in SF. I did a few likeness sketches from screenshots of Life Aquatic to prepare for my piece, which I'm thinking of titling "An Interesting Specimen." More later!

Also props to those who came out for the Project Ethos event at the House of Blues this past Friday, even though I forgot to post about it in advance. I had seven older paintings and four even older drawings in the show, along with four or so other artists, not to mention live painting, live music, fashion designers, and supermodels. lots and lots of supermodels. I just finished this painting for the garbage pail kids show at Gallery 1988! I did the whole thing in one day, which is something of a record for me, and I'm pretty happy with the results. I don't normally get all Lisa Frank with my colors, but it seemed somehow fitting for the theme.

...aaaand the sketch. I meshed the two together to get some more oomph in the neck. Anyway the show opens this Friday, and as is the case with all of their group shows, the lineup is killer. Check it out if you're in the area!

I must have been drunk one night when I noticed this pattern in our hardwood floor, because I've been staring at this floor for years without any sign of a brain wave. Anyway, after the first time I saw it, I couldn't stop seeing it, so finally I gave up trying to ignore inspiration and made a doodle of what I had envisioned...

Here's the thumbnail, aaaand below is what I made of it. All digital, for a change! I worked on it here and there over the past couple weeks, mostly when I had something else that I was supposed to be doing.

I was quite honored to be a part of this show, Terra Obscura, put on by the Upper Six Hundreds, which took place last night. Actually, saying that it "took place" isn't quite the right phrase... it's more like it exploded into being in a shower of light and music! Basically the show was incredible, and thank you thank you to everyone who came out, and especially to the Upper Sixers for putting so much time and effort into transforming their home into such a magical space.

I made another sculpture in the same series as Chompers, a badger with an equally wicked grin. The pictures don't do this one justice, as I really think it's even better than the first sculpture. Unfortunately during the frenzy of making this I forgot to take process photos, so you'll just have to take my word that it's made from sculpey with an aluminum foil endoskeleton, and painted with acrylic. Mr. Badger will be for sale on Etsy shortly once I get some better photos of it.

I'm back from an unintended hiatus due to work, travel, and the various opportunities that the beautiful weather in LA has to offer. One of these opportunities being landscape drawing! I went out trekking through Will Rogers park yesterday with some of the Sunday painting posse. Drawing was a blast, but most of our day was spent bushwhacking and exploring abandoned buildings, which is also obviously a blast.

I can never get my moleskine scans to look as nice as they do in real life, they always look washed out and kind of flat. One day I swear I'll get a nice scanner. And waterproof hiking shoes.

Hey everybody. I'm back from vacation with good news: after a few finishing touches and a few parting tears, Chompers is officially for sale!

You can read more about this sculpture in my previous post here. This was also featured on Drawn! back in June, which you can see in their archives here.

protrudes approx. 13" from the wall (from base to tip of nose)
approx 14" tall (from bottom of plaque to tip of the ears)
approx 8" at the widest part.
fitted with a 50lb-strength wire and comes with equipment for hanging.

I'm really fond of this little guy and will be sorry to see him go, but I'm excited for Chompers to have a new good home. I've decided to extend the series and am currently in production on the next couple of pieces, more on that to come.

Is This Thing On? opening!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the opening at Gallery 1988 on Friday! It was a wild success. Such a wild success in fact, that there is talk of artists, and some of the comedians who appeared throughout the work, creating even more art for the closing party! Keep your eyes peeled on Gallery 1988's website for more details.

I was called upon to pay tribute to Paul Reubens, better known as Peewee Herman. The portrait of him is done in the style of my favorite artist, John Singer Sargent, but the handmade vinyl frame is pure Peewee, inspired by some of the furniture in his Playhouse. There was a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in this one but I am thrilled with the results. The show will be up for another month or so, go check it out if you're in the LA area! I promise you it's worth it!

Is This Thing On?

I've got a piece in the upcoming show at Gallery 1988 called "Is This Thing On?" which pays tribute to a plethora of gifted comedians, living and not-so-living alike. I was assigned the immense task of capturing Paul Reubens, aka PeeWee Herman, in all of his essence, in a single image. I'm super excited about my piece and can't wait to unveil it, but I'll give you a hint right now: there will be vinyl. lots of vinyl. sparkly, sparkly vinyl.
The artist lineup is killer and the show is going to be amazing. If you're in LA Friday night, it is the place to be.

some alla prima color studies to keep my hands warm. apparently the trick with alla prima is to not completely mix colors on your palette, but rather let all of the individual contributing pigments show through on your painting surface. Petar Meseldzija has a really wonderful blog post about this subject and a lot of other awesome things. reeeead it.

So I'd had enough of dead, ratty, stuffed animals at the museum - it was time for real, pouncing, leaping, snarling ones. Yesterday I had the great privilege of another amazing trip to the Wildlife Waystation, a non-profit wildlife rescue organization specializing in exotic animals, to hang out with a pride of exceptionally lazy lions and a gorgeous, graceful beauty of a tiger.

Thanks to Gary Geraths and the wonderful volunteers at the Waystation for making the trip happen. The Waystation is a seriously amazing place, and they're operating on donations right now so be a mensch and donate a couple dollars to the Wildlife Waystation for being so awesome. Your new feline friends will appreciate it.

so here's the rest of the little drawing series I finished recently. it's a new process of actually doing something with all the little ideas scattered across my sketchbook that haven't come fully to fruition, rather than just letting them sit there. these drawings are just value studies, sort of like tests to see if the ideas are worth pursuing further. a couple may eventually become larger and more complex images, some won't be so lucky...
anyway, enough blabbin, here they are.

ta daaa! the finished piece for the Post-Penumbra show last weekend! did some watercolor and gouache washes on top of the graphite drawing, bit of a journey into the unknown, but I learned a lot and I think it came out alright.

phase 1 of the mounted fox head sculpture (which I have begun to refer to lovingly as "chompers") is nearly finished. he just needs a few more teeth, and then its on to the fun part: paint job.

a sketch for my next piece. its sort of a triptych so each figure is on a separate but corresponding panel. I'm planning to do this one up in graphite and watercolor, which is something I don't normally use, but it seems to be the best choice of medium for this. all I can do is cross my fingers and hope for the best.

on a side note, the patterns across their bodies aren't war paint or tattoos. they represent a sort of deep inner evil that seeps out and taints the skin, like there is so much blackness on the inside that it can hardly be contained. in other words, you wouldn't want to cross paths with these ladies, despite how appealing they may seem.

some people like to go to bookstores or starbucks or something to draw normal people. but its so much more fun to draw the crazies. if you're in LA or santa monica I recommend open mic night at the Unurban Cafe friday nights. thats where they tend to pool.

also, I've been kind of obsessed with drawing hands lately. and tennis shoes.

Preface for this post: anyone who knows me is painfully aware of my obsessive love for the Big Lebowski. In my opinion, it is not only the greatest movie of our time, but it just might be the only movie ever made.
That being said, this is what I've been doing the past week and a half: preparing a costume to win 1st place in Achieverhood at Lebowski Fest Los Angeles 2010. It was a difficult task, ridden with hot glue burns and spraypaint fumes. But I'm happy to say, we went out and achieved anyway.

I have a vision.
I've been working on this sculpture of a decapitated fox head for the past week or two. if you squint in the photo you can see some of the concept sketches in the background in the old sketcheroo.

In other news, I'm moving into a new studio next week, super excited! I will finally have the space to start on all these painting ideas that have been accumulating over the past few weeks, dark weeks in which my box of paint has no doubt filled with cobwebs... those days are soon to be over, my friends. more on that later!
